LINCOLN and BANGOR - Fannie Farnsworth Hurd, 96, died July 18, 2009, at a Lincoln health care facility. She was born Aug. 3, 1912, in Lincoln, the youngest daughter of Charles and Sadie (Miller) Farnsworth. Fannie was a longtime resident of Lincoln and Bangor. Fannie graduated from Mattanawcook Academy in June 1930. She also attended the "Little Red School House" until her fifth year in grammar school. She later taught at the "Little Red School House" after she graduated from the "New" Castine Normal School in 1933. While Fannie attended Castine Normal School she was very active in the hiking, dramatics, debating and athletics clubs. The class wrote in her yearbook, "your quick, ever-ready smile and sunny ways would take her far." That it did! Fannie and her husband, Bob, ran South Lincoln General Store, Lincoln Variety Store and the Sears Catalog Store, Lincoln, for many years. Fannie's retirement years were spent traveling, in and out of the U.S., with relatives and friends. Fannie was an active bridge player and a beautiful seamstress. She also loved the water and sailing, hiking and her family.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert; three brothers, Ralph, Lawrence and Melzar; and two sisters, Sylvia and Lena. She is survived by two sons, Arthur and his wife, Carole, of Lincoln and Douglas and his wife, Diana, of Gorham; one grandson, Donnie of Westbrook; and one granddaughter, Michele Michaud and her husband, Jeff, of Vassalboro. The family thanks Community Health and Counseling Services for the help they gave Fannie in the last weeks of her life.
Friends may call 10 a.m.-noon Wednesday, July 22, at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. Graveside services will be held noon Wednesday at Lincoln Cemetery with the Rev. Linda Hatch officiating.
