EDITH H. (GAGE) GIPSON

LINCOLN - Edith H. (Gage) Gipson, 92 years young, passed from this life July 12, 2010, at a Lincoln health care facility, after a very long journey with Alzheimer's. She was born July 13, 1917, in Fort Kent, the daughter of Mary (Austin) Gage and William Gage.

Edith was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth R. Gipson; an infant son; daughter, Judith; two sisters, Elizabeth and Viola; a brother, Bud; and son-in-law, Desmond Curley. She is survived by her daughter, Iris Curley of Winthrop; her son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Bonny Gipson of Aberdeen, Miss.; son-in-law, Alton Shedd and wife, Mary, of Maine and Florida; six grandchildren, Jean, Judy, Cathy, Mike, Mark and Kimberli; several great-grandchildren.

Her growing up summers were spent at Cross Lake with her large extended family, where they participated in many outdoor activities and where she developed a love of canoeing. She continued these activities for more than 50 years at her camp on Cold Stream Pond, where summers were spent with numerous friends and family. Edith worked with her husband as a business owner in Mattawamkeag for many years operating a grocery store, hardware store and a laundromat. At the same time she completed her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Maine and went on to start a second career as an elementary school teacher in Mattawamkeag, East Millinocket and Lincoln. Retirement came in 1977 and led to several years of international travel with friends and family. Bridge playing became her passion and as a member of the local bridge club, Edith participated in many tournaments locally and throughout the state.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, July 24, at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. Interment will be at Lincoln Cemetery.
