Old Orchard Beach---Anita Burnell died at a Saco healthcare facility on September 14th, following a brief illness. Anita was born on April 17, 1927 in Caribou, Maine. She was the youngest of the eight children of Paul and Agnes Smart. Anita attended school in Caribou until the age of 12, at which time she ended her formal education in order to enter the workforce. Although she regretted having to end her schooling at such an early grade level, Anita took pride in being able to shoulder hard work and responsibility at a young age.
Such a strong and practical approach to life sustained her some years later when her first child died suddenly at the age of only 11 yrs. & 9 mos. Anita lived in Lincoln with her husband, Richard, for many years after her retirement. Together, the two of them traveled extensively throughout the United States.
Anita was pre-deceased by a son, Donald, in 1956 and by her husband, Richard Carlow, Sr., in 2003. She is survived by a daughter, Gloria Fisher, of Windham; three granddaughters, Catherine Beane of Old Orchard Beach, Gale Martin of Windham, and Racheal Fisher of Windham; as well as one sister, Cecile Currier, of Portland.
There will be no visiting hours. A graveside memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, September 27, 2008 at New Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland. Arrangements are by Clay Funeral Home of Lincoln.
